Trick or Treating in the gardens of Carroll Terrace

Residents of Carroll Terrace, on Virginia Street East in Charleston, invite the public to come trick-or-treating at the complex’s community garden!  During Charleston’s designated trick-or-treat time – Thursday, October 29, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Carroll Terrace residents and garden participants will be handing out candy to area youth and offering the neighborhood a chance to tour the garden.

“Opening the garden for trick-or-treaters seems like a natural fit for the program,” said Melissa Stewart, Extension Agent for West Virginia State University Extension Service, who created the garden along with Charleston-Kanawha Housing and the assistance of local organizations.  “This will allow the residents of Carroll Terrace to interact with the kids in the community while showing off their impressive gardening skills.”

The garden was established in 2005 and features an English Herb Garden, ornamental beds, four community garden plots and 40 individual garden beds. Professional landscaping, solar lighting, physically accessible pathways, and other features make the garden more than just a place to grow fruits and vegetables.

Carroll Terrace residents have embraced the project and work tirelessly caring for and maintaining their gardens. The residents look forward to sharing their new found talents and produce with visitors. This is the second year residents have opened the garden to trick-or-treaters.
