Continuing with the Economic Stimulus grant for improving the streetscape along Charleston’s west side, the West Side Main Street (WSMS) program has been awarded $13,500 to continue improving the area between Beatrice Street and Hunt Avenue. WSMS will use the money to “clean up” the area and purchase trash receptacles along with street furniture and benches along this section of the Washington Street corridor.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the West Virginia University Bureau of Business and Economic Research Tuesday released a report that shows the Mountain State's institutions of higher learning generated $7.9 billion in business volume and 40,600 jobs during fiscal year 2008.
The Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NE SARE) program recently awarded $2.9 million to 23 farmers, 18 agricultural service providers, 14 researchers, 10 community groups, and four agricultural educators. In all, 69 projects throughout the United States will explore new sustainable techniques that focus on improved profits, good stewardship, and strengthening the social fabric of farm communities.
Hundreds of senior athletes will gather to compete in the 23rd annual West Virginia Geri Olympics on April 16th at the South Charleston Recreation Center. The event begins at 8:30 a.m.
This year, the Olympic Games will include over 200 nursing home residents from 25 nursing care facilities competing in a wide variety of Olympic style athletic events including bowling, basketball and wheelchair races.
West Virginia State University is seeking applicants for a research project designed to increase the use of high tunnels in agricultural production in West Virginia. Five applicants will be chosen to trial eco-friendly high tunnel systems over a five year period with the hope of extending the planting season for growers.

Groups of youth from Huntington gather regularly at the Barnett Center’s Community Learning Garden. It’s here that they learn about gardening and have formed a group called the Junior Master Gardener Huntington Urban Gardeners.
WVSU Extension Service is holding a wreathmaking workshop on December 8 from 10am - 1pm. It will take place in the Wilson Student Union on campus.
